Supreme Court upholds death sentence in Nirbhaya gangrape-murder case

9 July,2018: The Supreme Court of India today upheld the verdict of death sentence in Nirbhaya gang-rape-murder case.

SC bench comprising of justice Dipak Misra and justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan rejected the pleas of three accussed Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23).

"There is no new material to review our order," said three judges. "brutal, barbaric and diabolic nature" of the crime could create a "tsunami of shock" to destroy a civilised society

Fourth death row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, has not filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's judgement in May last year.Rohan Mahajan, the lawyer representing the family of the gang-rape victim, said it was a "victorious moment".
