Ustad Bismillah Khan (born as Amiruddin Khan)Bharat Ratna ,(born:21 March 1916 ,died:21 August 2006) , was an condidered as best shehnai player, a subcontinental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai had long held importance as a folk instrument played primarily during traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status and bringing it to the concert stage

Khan was born on 21 March 1916 in a family of traditional Muslim musicians in Bhirung Raut Ki Gali, Dumraon, in what is now the eastern state of Bihar, as the second son of Paigambar Baksh Khan and Mitthan

His ancestors were court musicians and used to play in Naqqar khana in the princely states of Bhojpur, now in Bihar. His father was a shehnai player in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate, Bihar

Khan was a pious Shi'ite Muslim, and was also a symbol of communal harmon

Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, instituted the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2007

The Government of India declared a day of national mourning on his death. His body along with a Shehnai was buried at Fatemain burial ground of old Varanasi under a neem tree with 21-gun salute from Indian Army

Bismillah Khan's shehnais stolen from son's home in Varanasi

Five shehnais belonging to late musician and Bharat Ratna awardee Ustad Bismillah Khan have been stolen from his sonís house in Varanasi. The theft was discovered late on 4 December 2016.

Along with the five shehnais ó four made of silver and the fifth a mix of silver and wood ó a silver plate of the Inayat Khan award won by the maestro and two gold bangles have also gone missing from the house in the Dalmandi area of the temple city in Uttar Pradesh.

Ustad Bismillah Khan's Shehnai Stolen by Grandson Recovered

The fifth stolen silver shehnai of Ustad Bismillah Khan was recovered by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday

During investigation his grandson Najre Hassan alias Shadab was arrested for committing the crime. A local jeweller Shanker Seth and his son Sujit Seth was also arrested in theft case.

The shehnais were recovered in a melted condition from a local jewellery shop here. Kazim's son Nazare got the four silver shehnais melted by jewellers Shanker and Sujit Seth in Chetganj area
