Importance of Agriculture in India

Agriculture sector gives job to 55% population of india.It contributes 17.4% to country's Gross Value Added.Agriculture sector contributes to 13% of GDP.Growth rate of Agriculture sectors is estimated to be 4.1% for 2016-17.


As per fourth Advance Estimates for 2014-15 total production of rice was 104.80 million tonnes.Production of wheat estimated at 88.94 million tonnes. total production of pulses & oilseeds estimated at 17.20 million tonnes & 6.07 million tonnes.

National Policy for Farmers

Government of India approved the National Policy for Farmers(NPF) in 2007.The policy provisions include reforms in respect of land,water,livestock etc.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana(PMKSY):

In this scheme an outlay of Rupees 50,000 crore for a period of 5 years(2015-16 to 2019-20) has been alloted.

Kisan Credit Card

This scheme is implemented by Commercial banks,Coperative banks,RRBs. It has facilated in agumenting credit flow in agricultural activities.

Soil and water Productivity

Land resource inventory on 1:10,000 scale was prepared taking Landscape Ecological Unit(LEU) consisting of landforms, land use and slope as the base map while bio-climatic map of India was revised.Electronic atlas of water resources devloped for Odisha and Himachal Pradesh, is a useful tool for catch assessment and devloping GIS based Decision Support System.
